18K-KARAT GOLD

  • Pros: Beautiful Color while still practical

  • Cons: Expensive and may scratch

18k gold is composed of 75% gold and 25% alloy.  Due to the higher amount of gold being used it is also more expensive than 14k gold.  18K gold has a brighter golden color than 14K gold.  The rich yellow gold color pairs beautifully with diamonds and emeralds.  Due to it's higher gold content it is unlikely to cause any allergic reactions.  If you have had allergies to metals in the past, then 18k gold is a great option for you.  18k gold is less durable than 14k gold since it is more likely to scratch.  18K gold is a great choice for earrings, necklaces, or other fine jewelry that wont receive much contact.  18K gold has a richer more vibrant color.

All Precious Metals have their pros and cons.  18K gold disadvantage is that it is more expensive than 14K gold and also less durable due to being more soft.

14K-KARAT GOLD

  • Pros: A good mix of purity, durability, and value

  • Cons: More expensive than 10K gold but still affordable

14K is the most common used gold for engagement rings, wedding bands, and other fine jewelry.   It has a bright yellow hue color and is durable for everyday wear.  14K is affordable and will last a lifetime.   It will not tarnish or oxidize and will last a lifetime.

14K gold may incorporate zinc, nickel, silver, or copper, and is approximately 58% gold. 14k gold is the best for long-term wear while still keeping its luster. The biggest advantages of choosing 14k gold over 18k and 24k are its durability and affordability.  The reason that 14k gold is more durable is because of the mixture of metals which gives it resistance to scratching.  The higher the karat the less durable the metal will be.

All precious metals have their pros and cons.  The disadvantage of 14K gold is that it will need to be polished over time to maintain its shine and beauty.  That's where Bello Villa comes in.  Once you purchase a fine jewelry from us you will have a lifetime warranty which covers polishing.  Simply send us your jewelry and we will polish it for you and send it back.  We recommend you polish your wedding jewelry once a year.  In some rare cases if someone has an allergy to nickel, copper, or other alloys used in 14K gold may experience some irritation.  In this case, 18k solid gold is a better option.

10K-KARAT GOLD

  • Pros: Very affordable and durable

  • Cons: Lighter shade of gold, can trigger metal allergies

10 karat gold is made up of 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy, or 10 out of 24 parts gold. 10K gold is the least expensive out of the other options as it is comprised of the least amount of gold 10/24 parts.  This is also the reason why it is the most durable since 58.3% is made of alloys.

10K gold is not typically used for engagement rings or wedding rings since the gold content is lower than the other options.  14K gold and 18K gold are both good options for wedding jewelry.

The greatest advantage of 10K gold is it's cost and durability.  The appearance of 10K gold has a light gold hue which is not rich in color.  The color is a matter of preference.  If you are on a budget then 10K gold is the perfect option for you.  Since it is highly durable 10K gold will be extremely difficult to scratch, scuff, or bend.

If you have allergies to certain metals then 10K gold will not be a good option.  Since there is a high content of alloys you may be sensitive to 10K Gold.   If you're allergic to copper, silver, nickel, zinc, or iron then its probably best that you look for 14K or 18K gold.
